Abstract

Dr. Devine’s presentation will include a brief history of Counterstrain OMT as it progressed in clinical application in the assessment and treatment of pain. The application in manual medicine spread as it became evident that it was a powerful tool in the treatment of pain. It actually goes beyond just treating pain. It is helpful in diagnosis and management of acute and chronic pain and the causes of pain. The physiological aspects of Counterstrain OMT will be discussed as to its effect on nociceptive and proprioceptive reflex components on pain, the effect on reducing inflammation and healing. The effect on the somatic visceral reflex system, the neuroimmune system, the microcirculation system and the neurolymphatic system will be discussed. The treatment using the clinical application of counterstain goes beyond treating symptoms but can be diagnostic and promotes healing at many physiological levels beyond what was originally thought.
