Abstract
The treatment of acute and chronic pain using manual medicine has been subjectively documented for over a century. There is substantial research supporting the success of treating pain using manual medicine techniques; however, much of the research has been the analysis of subjective data. While subjective data alone is invaluable, collecting evidence based objective data in conjunction with subjective data would be more beneficial. With the assistance of The Ultralign SA201® system (Sigma Instruments; Cranberry, PA; USA) documenting quantifiable change in tissue hysteresis, has been made possible. 200 subjects were treated in the cervical spine with 4 different osteopathic manipulative treatment techniques and one sham treatment. Subjects were measured pre and post treatment with the Ultralign SA201® to assess for hysteresis changes in the cervical spine. A post treatment questionnaire was also given to each subject for assessment of the treatment. With the advancement of technology, objective measures were able to be used to support subjective findings.
